When should a shop sell the lock without offering installation?

A customer with a suitable door and their own installer may need a well-specified product order, rather than another installation package.

Selling a lock on its own can be the sensible offer when the customer already has someone to fit it. Ask who that person is, which door it is going on and who will handle the app setup. If those answers are clear, you can spend the conversation choosing the right version instead of trying to sell labour the buyer does not need.

Write down the exact model and what is included. “Yale Assure Lock 2” covers several choices in the manufacturer’s range, including different access and connectivity options. For a Wi-Fi order, the quotation should identify that version rather than leave the customer to infer it from a family name or product photo.

For an Aqara U100 order, pass on the official installation guide before the installer arrives. It covers door preparation and initial setup, not just attaching the panels. Agree who will add the owner’s account and access methods; a fitted lock and a lock ready for the household are two different handover points.

When the order needs more than a box

If no one has checked the door, the customer expects remote setup to be included, or the installer will not take responsibility for the handover, offer a separate assessment or a defined service package. Put the product, fitting and setup on separate lines, with any unresolved item marked for confirmation. That makes the offer easier to compare and gives your staff a clear next step.

Starting a smart-home shop in Canada or the US? Bring us the kinds of orders you expect to take. We can discuss a product range and where installation partners would help, then confirm the actual cooperation terms together.
