Start with the customer’s task, the existing physical setup and the person who will support it.
Ask what should become easier: entering without a key, opening a heavy curtain or managing lights. Keep the answer concrete. “A smarter house” is not yet a product requirement, and a customer should not need to know protocol names to begin the conversation.
Then ask what is already installed and request the relevant photographs or model numbers. Finally, ask who will set up and maintain the system. A keen homeowner and a property team may need different documentation even when they buy the same device.
Use the answers to offer one reasonable next step: a product comparison, a compatibility check or a scoped project discussion. Avoid collecting a long list of personal information merely to recommend an entry-level device. A short, useful exchange can make the store feel approachable and competent.
Before you order
- Record the practical task in plain words.
