Use an ordinary compatible plug-in load and make the measurement boundary visible.
Show a device switched on, in standby and off, then explain what the readings describe. The demonstration measures the appliance connected through that plug. It is not a substitute for metering an electrical panel, a whole apartment or a hardwired HVAC circuit.
Check the regional plug and electrical rating before connecting the demonstration load. If the product uses Thread or a particular controller setup, include those parts in the display list. Do not turn an energy-monitoring example into an automatic shutoff recommendation for refrigeration or other critical equipment.
Invite the customer to identify one noncritical appliance they want to understand better. That creates a sensible first purchase and a way to collect a baseline. Any broader energy-management proposal should begin with a separate scope and suitable measurement equipment.
